Recording Wildlife to preserve our Valley

After the debacle with the threat of monstrous pylons straddling our valley, we need to protect it for the future. We have discovered that a good way to do this is is to record the Flora and Fauna of Kirkmahoe.
A group of us met with Mark Pollitt of Dumfries & Galloway Environmental Resources Centre and came away with many ideas, forms and leaflets for us to use.
1.The golden Rule we must learn is the 4 W’s
Who, What , When, Where
Who saw it
What was it (brief description plant, animal, insect, amphibian)
When was it (date time)
Where was it (ideally map reference)
He also gave us website addresses and Apps which we can use to help identify species if we are unsure of what we are looking at. Some of these sites are really fun to use, and we are sure you will enjoy them. Better to add here they are FREE to download.
At the end of the day if still not sure what we are looking at we can send all our info to Mark and his department will sort it all out for us.
2 Have a camera with you
It is a good idea when out and about to have a camera handy either on your phone or otherwise so that you can photograph what you are looking at. This helps with identification.
3 Forms
Recording Forms  - you can either print these off or fill in online.
Download Forms including Excel forms
You can also send in your sighting using the form at the foot of this page.

To do this we need everyone to help. A good starting place is your own garden. You can all go out there weather permitting and start making a record of what you see.
You have the tools required to do this. If you are not sure take a photo and attach it to your form.
We shall be leaving some interesting information in Kirkton Hall for you to look at. As it is scarce sorry we cannot let you take it home.
Most of all have great fun with the websites and apps. Play around with them and become familiar with how they operate.
Send your info to kirkmahoe@gmail.com headed Wildlife Survey

Wild flower and plant recording

As well as recording our birds and animals we also should record the wild plants which flourish around Kirkmahoe.

Here are some useful website links to help you identify what you have seen.
